In 1859 Jean Henry Dunant witnessed the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino and his work led to the formation of the Red Cross, with a key aim of "aid to sick and wounded soldiers in the field" and gradually this concept was applied in the peace time also. It is now "assistance with care" given to any person suffering from sudden illness or injury to preserve life or to prevent the patients condition from worsening or promote his recovery. There are many situations which may require first aid. We hold regular First Aid camps at Gangasagar Mela, International Kolkata Book Fair and other melas & festivals. Indian Red Cross Society is one of the largest provider of First Aid post in the country.

Gangasagar Mela is held every year in the middle of the month of January at the southernmost tip of the Gangasagar Island, situated at the confluence of River Ganga & Bay of Bengal in the state of West Bengal. This Mela is considered as the second largest Mela in congregation of pilgrims after the Kumbha Mela, U.P in India. More than 10 lakh pilgrims from all over India, visit this Mela to worship at Kapail Muni Temple.

The IRCS, W.B State Branch along with South 24 Pargana IRCS District Branch play an important role in providing service to the pilgrims in the form of free medical camps, including Ambulance services, providing relief materials like Dhoti, Saree, Blankets etc. and Restoration of Family Link ( RFL) under Family News Services (FNS). RFL services are provided from FNS camps for reuniting separated family members in the huge gathering of pilgrims by using LCD screen, VHF radio network etc.
